  • Orbit vs Overboard - iPhone Expose Wannabe Showdown

Many of us got really excited when Orbit was first released. It allowed us to quickly get an Springboard Exposť-like look at our apps on each page. This was a first for the iPhone in Jailbreak Land and nothing new for many Mac OS X users. Being the only of it's kind, it was released to the Cydia Store at a price of $1.99.

Don't get me wrong, I love the work that Steven has put into his projects. I absolutely love Stacks and give kudos to his efforts. However, we have a contender now that looks to out perform Orbit.

On Friday, we saw the release of Overboard by Ryan Petrich (creator of Action Menu, Inspell, HapticPro, LiveClock, Rotation Inhibitor). Overboard is another Expose wannabe, but outperforms Orbit rather quickly. We also get support for Winterboard themes, full customization, and multiple ways to access it. For example this has become a rather handy replacement for my home button. In fact, I'm so impressed I don't know if I'll ever remove it. You can even create an icon on the springboard, or use the pinch gesture to activate it. The choice is yours.

Now here is the biggest kicker. For those of you on a 3GS you might not have noticed, but on the 3G, Orbit loads ridiculously slow the first time. Each page slowly appears one by one. Sometimes it would even get glitched out and not let me get back to my pages.

Overboard on the other hand has completely blown by Orbit in terms of speed. The incredibly fast load time is almost instantaneous on my 3G and when activated from the home button performs outstandingly (is that word?). Of course in terms of speed, this is on first load after a respring, as Orbit caches after it loads.

Some of you may not use Winterboard, which defeats a few of the perks that Overboard has. Orbit uses the Icon-Small.png as the mini icons, so those are easy to change without Winterboard, allowing for a better compatibility with those who prefer BossPaper over Winterboard.

However, that being said, Orbit seems to have lost support as Steven has a lot on his plate right now, so Overboard might be your best bet now.

Update: Orbit also releases an update that adds home button support, search page, theme support, dynamic sizing and performance improvement.

The big Orbit-killer for me is that obnoxiously large Spotlight icon which can't be hidden and the inabilty to toggle the home button binding. Overboard wins on both counts. According to his twitter feed, Steven feels that adding a prefpane implies that the app is too complicated. Of course, this is likely because Overboard beat him to the punch and he's kinda jealous.

I liked Orbit, but Overboard is far far better.

Overboard is faster, lets user choose if we want the spotbright page, has more ways to invoke it, displays the icons more clearly, and most importantly lets user extend the number of springboard pages beyond just 11 pages.

I installed this app but doing so I lost my double-tap home shortcut to go to phone favorites. Whenever I double-tap home now it goes into overboard. I disabled it in sbsettings - substrate add-ons but It still boots overboard and not my phone favorites, VERY annoying. One cause I think was I uninstalled it while it was disabled in sbsetting - substrate-addons (i notced a warning afterwards that you need to have substrates add-ons enabled to uninstall it. Anyway, I removed/uninstalled it but it's still there for some reason, cydia says it's gone but when I double-tap home it still boots into overboard and not phone favorites. I reinstalled it thinking the problem was that I disabled the toggle in substrate-add-ons in sbsettings prior to uninstalling and now when I double-tap home It opens 2 sessions of overboard! Even when I uninstall it it's still there when I double-tap home. How can I fix this? I want my double-tap to phone favorites shortcut back

Have you tried going back into Settings > General > Home and just reselecting your option for your home button double tap?

I am sticking with Categories. I know where my apps are without having to dish out cash to make it fancy looking.

Yeah I've tried that but it still opens 2 sessions of overboard, or if I uninstall it just the one session opens. Pretty annoying. I think I need to manually remove it somehow?

never used orbit but overboard has been working flawlessly for me. such a neat trick to show non-jailbroken iphone owners and make them jealous.

THEY ARE THE SAME THING!!! Except Obrit seems to be a lil cleaner visually
+1 w00t! =] I like orbit cause it definately is cleaner looking than overboard, more "applesque" in my opinion; lol Apple should add this and multifl0w to OS 4.0! lol =P (truth be told apple should add alot of things cydia has lol) I do like the pinch actually, plus I trust Steve more as a developer. It all comes down to preference really.

i like overboard much better, I used orbit for about 2 weeks, then the update which implemented spotlight, it would keep sending my phone into safe mode, so I couldn't use it any longer. Overboard is much faster, and loads much quicker.

Orbit 1.1.2 update has been released on Cydia today folks.

Orbit now has a preference pane in SETTINGS to toggle Home Button enable ON/OFF, as well as an ON/OFF toggle for the Spotlight button.

      Seems quite speedy IMO.

      Has anybody tried it yet?

I installed it back again just to see. Improved performance, the preferences are a welcome addition. The problem I see is there are so many other mods now that use the "Home" button that maybe Orbit should make use of other means to recall. Maybe "gestures" can activate it. I've docked it in SBSettings to make it available, since I also use mQuickDo and Kirikae.

      Orbit 1.1.3 kills Overboard!!!
    1. eaglesteve's Avatar

Orbit 1.1.3 has made improvement in having bigger icons (now seems like it is adopting the size used in Overboard)and itperforms faster than before.

However, it still lags Overboard in visual beauty and functionalities. Overboard can be invoked also by pinching, gives the option of showing the dock, gives the option to extend the number of springboard pages.

I think Orbit has a little uphill battle here. The first version of Overboard got everything right the first time. Orbit is immediately on the defensive, playing the catchup game. It would have to catch up with Overboard's functionalities, and think of something that Overboard does not have. This is going to be tough.

Using Orbit 1.1.4, it does not support 5 column/5 rows.
      Overboard does.

Orbit 1.1.4 made my iPhone unstable so I finally gave in and picked up Overboard... man is it faster!

Although Orbit is more Apple-esque, Overboard is much snappier and more stable.
