  • Redsn0w Updated. Adds Custom Boot Logos and Settings Simplification

Just as all of us modders have finally gotten our untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.1 (except for the iPad 2,) and with a release of 4.3.2 looming, presumably to patch the untether created by @i0n1c, @MuscleNerd and the rest of the iPhone Dev Team have released redsn0w RC10 RC11, an upgrade from the original release for iOS 4.3.1, RC9.

According to the dev team blog, redsn0w RC9 "enabled too many settings" for specific devices, confusing some users as they jailbroke their devices. The new update hopes to solve this confusion, simplifying the default settings, and then allowing users to choose settings as needed, as long as they know what they're doing.

The update also adds compatibility for animated boot logos (which the team says is "more robust across all devices.") We first saw this option in the latest greenpois0n, the 4.2.1/4.2.6 jailbreak released by the chronic dev team, and later added to the windows-only jailbreak solution, sn0wbreeze, created by @ih8sn0w.

@MuscleNerd reminds unlockers to only use custom IPSWs created with sn0wbreeze or pwnagetool that specifically preserve the baseboard. He has also mentioned over the past few days that 4.3.1 accidentally breaks ultrasn0w, and an update for the package is in the works. It should be noted that this update is simply for compatibility with current unlockable basebands. It will not unlock any baseboards that have not previously been unlocked.

Lastly, he also reminds jailbreakers, that "unless mentioned otherwise in blog post, you should be able to run redsn0w on top of whatever [jailbreak] you have for that [firmware.]" So if you've already jailbroken on 4.3.1, feel free to run the new redsn0w on top of your current jailbreak to add custom boot logos.

redsn0w RC11 is available for Windows and Mac, and can be downloaded at the dev team blog or at the following links:

Good article, but you should mention that if you want to run RC11 over your existing jailbreak you should uncheck "install Cydia". There are an influx of people that are jailbreaking recently that have no idea what they are doing and need their hands held

The latest update to shrink 0.9.7-1 is working for me on my iPhone 4 on 4.3.1. Most apps are working on 4.3.1 now there are only a few I use that don't.

My iPhone 4 is still on 4.2.1 (not jailbroken yet) and would like to check with you guys before I upgrade to 4.3.1 if the upgrade and then jailbreaking would affect the battery of the phone? I use and rely on 3G internet connection a lot, which means that any issues with battery life may negatively affect the whole situation. What do you think - advise?

      Many thanks.

So let me ask you all, should I just bite the bullet and upgrade to 4.3.1 or just stick with 4.0? I have all SHSH blobs saved so that is not an issue, I guess I have been lazy and never saw the need to upgrade.

And just to make sure I am reading this correctly, this is an untethered JB right?
You should bite the bullet because of new original functions like wifi hotspot, selectable rotating/mute switch (which is for iPad), java update for safari and anything else that make stock iOS better than before... As for me, I would rather upgrade in spite of being out of date..(speculation)

In stead of "Quick reply", go to "Advance". Then look for "Thread Subscription" and in "Notification Type", choose "Do not subscribe". A big work Done !!!!

Does this update fix the bug on the iPhone 4 with the signal bars? When you preserve an older baseband..

Wait I don't understand how is the settings confusing? R they talkin about the settings in the stock FW. Or is this in cydia?

I think most important fact is performance. Only the appearance of the Signal bar dosen't help the convenience of the consumer.

Yeah, um, it would have been nice if the article mentioned you have to uncheck "install cydia".

It hung, but I just cancelled it and rebooted and tried again. Went through this time

Update: The program "Animate" on Cydia is also needed (for animated boot logos).

Update #2: Installed Animate, installed boot logo, selected in Settings - does not show when rebooted.

Perhaps they assumed that was obvious. Although, if it's the same people who have taken a week to make Sprintomize 1.4 available, all bets are off.

I hope this isn't a silly question but I jailbroke on Tuesday with redsn0w. This thread indicates that I can jailbreak overtop of that with this new one. If I do so, will I need to reinstall all of the jailbroken apps and sources that I've already restored onto my device? (I have pkgbackup already so that process isn't too much of a hassle, just wanted to understand what to expect when I "jailbreak over RC9".

As always, Thanks a million !!!!!

I'm guessing if I did the first jailbreak for 4.3.1 there is not really a need to run it again if I don't want the custom boot logos right?

You don't need to. If you have Cydia already you don't need to reinstall but it doesn't do any harm if you do. It is quicker if you uncheck it if you already have Cydia but it certainly doesn't do any harm if you dont.
