  • New iPhone 6 Concept Features a 4.8-inch Edge-to-Edge Display

Rumor has it that Apple will be launching the new generation iPhone with a 4.8-inch screen which competes with Android smartphones that are similar in size. Due to these speculations, Steve Hemmerstoffer of Nowehereelse.fr and Martin Hajek delivered what they thought the 4-8 inch screened iPhone 6 may look like with a touch of their own creativity:

    • Due to a bigger screen, an additional column of apps could be added to the Home screen and instead of 4 apps on the dock there would be 5.
    • An ultra-thin/sleek design
    • Instead of iPhone’s current Home button, it would be replaced with a clickable display- which was inspired by the clickable trackpad currently on the MacBook.
    • Although with a bigger screen, it would be a 4.8 inch edge to edge display so that the size of the phone wouldn’t be increased proportionally
    • The casing on the back of the phone would have chamfered edges and anodized aluminum coating- inspired by the iPod touch 5G/iPad Mini

Based on recent speculation, it is probably unlikely Apple will release the bigger iPhone anytime soon and in 2013. The iPhone 5s which is the unofficial name of the next generation iPhone is expected to be no different than the current iPhone 5. The only differences are said to be better camera quality, a faster processor and other improved internal systems.

What are you looking for in the next generation iPhone?

That "sayin" business needs to stop already. We know you said it. It doesn't need to be announced. It's annoying and very stupid.

That's a LOT of ram! My MacPro only has 32Gig.

The iPhone 5 is 16:9 unlike how the other iPhones were 3:2.

I think he means 1080p or 720p. Oh how I love hearing uneducated buyers comments about a concept device, lol.

The iPhone doesn't have that much RAM, the iPhone 5 only has 1GB. I think you are talking about storage on the iPhone.

iOS doesn't need the crazy cores that androids use. iOS runs smoothly regardless.

Pretty ugly concept! Apple knows what they're doing when it comes to the iPhone, they're not going to cater to everyone's wishes and make a phone that's like every other smartphone out there. If some people don't like the new upgrades then go get another phone! Leaving Apple for a bigger screen isn't going to hurt them lol. This is the way it's always been and it's worked very well for them!

That's exactly what I was thinking. Every case I've seen has a part of it that covers a bit of the edges of the screen. If the screen were to go edge to edge, wouldn't you be losing that extra screen real estate? I think they should leave just a little gap so the cases have a little bit of room to attach to the front.

Edge to edge is old, it looks great but would not be great. Cases would be 3x harder to make and wouldn't wrap the screen. And apple would never do this after making an iPad mini

More like they produced a product for the people that want a large screen and also for the people that want a small screen.....do not see that as backtracking......seems they listen to their consumers/customers unlike Apple. I am about to dump the iPhone after having it since 2007 for the monster that is called Note 2. I do not care about using it one handed, at the moment I find the iPhone too small for my big *** hands anyway. iOS is really falling behind IMO....if they do eventually make a 5 inch phone I will be back.

Not really sure why this rumor keeps going around when Tim cook himself squashed it by saying "our screen size is perfect" at there earnings call when a reporter asked if we will see a wider screen. Personally the whole reason I have an iPhone is because of how nice it fits in my hand. They get rid of that ill prolly go with a different phone. I laugh like hell every time I see someone talking on what could be considered a tablet lol.

Nope. It would finally FORCE case makers to make them how I want. Even the most minimal cases bragging about how minimalistic they are have raised edges along the entire screen. I've long hated that, especially when it interferes with doing something on the edge of the screen even with a small bezel. Why? Because there is almost no point to it except for a full protective case. Most surfaces the phone can fall on are flat. The vast majority of drops would be equally protected by a bumper case that was only raised on the top and bottom (corners included). With no raised portion on the sides of the screen it could fall straight down on a flat surface and the screen wouldn't touch (suspended by the raised impact protection around the top/bottom/corners). Even on uneven surfaces, the raised edges only protect THE EDGE, so they are not doing much.

My ideal case would be a full bumper that is raised all the way around on the back side like normal but raised everywhere except the left and right of the screen on the front side. The actual frame around the side would have just as much protection as a typical bumper.

A couple more things: If Apple ever went edge-to-edge, they would certainly not make the phone thicker, so it's unlikely that the silence switch and volume buttons would still be there. I can see them turning the power button into a "push-to-click" combination power/lock and silence switch (move switch to set mode, press to lock/power off). They still have the touch-sensitivity patent so I would expect some kind of a touch-sensitive bezel on the side for the volume controls, though it'd have to be insensitive without being combined with another gesture (involving the silence switch?). This will also help with scrolling. The iPhone 5 style appears to be designed with a touch-sensitive back in mind, which I expect to see in the iPhone 5S, but it makes sense considering that Samsung bought a controlling interest in Wacom and Apple will not be able to get an their own "S Pen" for the larger iPhone. It could be used as both a pointer and a scrolling area that doesn't cause accidental interaction with objects inside the page being scrolled (no more accidentally clicking links while intending to scroll).

I DO NOT think the screen with be "press to click" for returning to the home screen, especially at that size. Firstly, it's WAY too easy to do accidentally and there is already a tablet gesture for it. Plus, look at all that area at the bottom and tell me it's not big enough for a non-square home button or touch-sensitive function. If there were a push/click function, it would be to simulate the pointer function I implied would replace S Pen functionality on their larger phone.

The push to click screen failed miserably with the Blackberry Storm. It just made it a pain in the ***.
