  • Google Maps Updated to Version 1.1

Just yesterday, Google launched an update for their Google Chrome Web browser for iOS. Google has followed up Tuesday with an update for Google Maps, the popular navigation application that Google launched in December 2012. Tuesday's update is the first update to Google Maps since its launch.

The update to Google Maps adds the ability to search with your Google Contacts, allowing you to sign in and have your saved addresses show up when you search for people by name. This feature was highly requested by users, being that it was available in Apple's Maps application in iOS 6, and makes it easier to navigate based on the people you have saved addresses for.

The update also makes it easier to find local places, as you can now browse through specific categories including, but not limited to: restaurants, gas stations, and others. Users will also now be able to choose between two different popular units of measure – miles and kilometers.

Like Apple’s Maps application in iOS 6, Google Maps comes with turn-by-turn navigation. Since its initial release, Google Maps has held a solid 4.5-star rating in the App Store, and continues to earn its well-deserved reputation as a solid navigation application for iOS.

If you already have Google Maps installed, you will find the update to version 1.1 in the Updates tab in the App Store. Alternatively, you can download Google Maps version 1.1 from this link.

Sudden trust in google product dropped because of Chrome crashing and it requiring users to enable a data collection option for it to work. smh

Is there a tweak to make google maps the "default" maps app instead of the apple maps app?

Are Google or Apple for that matter planning on adding traffic re-routes to the apps?

Being that Mapquest has turn-by-turn also but is alone with the free traffic routing function.

You're surprised about this? I get traffic in the Seattle Metro area just fine with 1.0 and 1.1 versions of Maps.

Hell, I used an Android phone after finding out how terrible maps from Apple was. I rely too heavily on it day-to-day to suffer through what Apple thought was a shippable product in iOS maps.

AssistantLove in the BigBoss repo for 1.99 allows you to choose Google Maps as default when asking Siri for directions. Lots of other cool features too for Siri too

I suppose an iPad version would be too much to ask? (Spoken with derision and HEAVY sarcasm)

Wouldn't FullForce for iPad let you get that full-screen map experience you're looking for?

I don't have an iPad, so I can't test this unfortunately.
