  • Chrome for iOS Updated with a Slew of Features

Shortly after an update to Chrome for Android last week, Google ended up recently updating Chrome for iOS for the first time since December. The Android version of the app included several features such as improved scrolling performance, increased responsiveness for pinch zooming on pages and faster interactive pages with the iOS app receiving an update with the ability to long-press on the back button to quickly access any page in the tab history.

    Google Chrome (iTunes Download Link)

The newest version of the free mobile browser allows iOS users to share a web page via Messages and also includes several stability enhancements as well as unspecified security improvements and bug fixes. Another notable feature that was included by Google includes the ability for iOS users to see their search term in the omnibox instead of the long search URL. According to Google:

This will help you refine search queries and view more content on the results page. This feature will roll out in the coming weeks, so you may not see it right away after upgrading.
Those of you who want more details on the update can hit the source link below.

The bug in @googlechrome was analyzed by @phoenixdev, who found some jailbreak-detection logic that assumed you had turned on crash reports.

(In addition to changing that setting--to work around @googlechrome's mistake --you may also need to uninstall Chrome hacks you may have.)

Sigh. @googlechrome added untested jailbreak-specific code on iOS; if you have "send crash reports" off, it crashes. https://code.google.com/p/chromium/i...?id=179970#c13
Avoid if you depend on jailbreak tweaks with Google Chrome - or uninstall your tweaks.

I did the following and didn't have to uninstall/reinstall

You can fix this by just changing a file with iFuxbox or iFile
      Go to:
      var/mobile/applications/(chrome app folder)/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

Open and edit the file called "Local State" and find this line:
      "reporting_enabled": false,

Replace the "false," to "true," like this:

      "reporting_enabled": true,

Restart or respring and you're ready to go.

The problem only occurs on jailbroken phones, and only those phones that have Chrome Download Manager installed. There are two solutions to the crash:

This one worked for me on a j/b iPad3 6.1.2:
      Solution 1:
      1. Uninstall CDM
      2.Uninstall Chrome
      3. Reinstall Chrome
      4. (Quickly) Accept request to share usage and crash data. (I'm pretty sure we can change this later.)

This one worked for me on a j/b iPhone 4S 6.1.2
      Solution 2:
      1. Update Chrome
      2. Go to var/mobile/applications/(chrome app folder)/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
      3. Open/Edit Local State file and change “reporting_enabled” flag to “true”

That's it. CDM is still installed, and Chrome works. I used WinSCP to edit the Local State file.

It crashes for me and I dont have CDM installed so that cant be it.

I back up all my apps so I have the previous version so I just installed that version and its working again.
Then I edited the app to say the version number is higher than it is and it now never asks to update in App Store.

The crash is caused by turning off the anonymous usage data. Turn that to wifi only and it works fine.

I had uninstalled/reinstalled and it worked until I turned off the anonymous usage data. I uninstalled/reinstalled again and left that on and it works fine. Others are reporting the se thing in the reviews on the AppStore.

Yea I don't have Chrome Download Manager installed and it's crashing. Can't have anything to do with it. I think it's just a bug related to the "Send Usage Data" feature of Chrome...quite an oversight

If you're having an issue with Google Chrome and you have purchased Flex, then there is a patch in the Flex Community Cloud (free download) that you can use to stop the crashing.

If you add the following repo to cydia you will find a crash fix.

For people who want to downgrade .. Delete it from your idevice, and find it in the bin of your PC ... Thats if you did not empty it and if you synced at least once with previous version installed.
I dont have instructions for MacOSX, this works for Windows.

Didn't work for me. Still crashes instantly. I've removed CDM and Browser chooser and uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times. Frustrating. Hopefully all the negative attention this is getting will lead google to release a fix.

There's no way for this to work. Mine crashes almost instantly. There's no time to sneeze, let alone change settings.
