  • iPhoneModem with zsrelay - Secure, Solid, and Free

A few days ago, we showed you iPhoneModem, by Addition. If you like a super quick solution with no security, but a great interface and extreme ease of use, that solution is still a great one, and can be found on our Cydia source as iPhoneModem by Addition. It is shareware, running $9.99.

Last night we posted iPhoneModem zsrelay - a solution (which actually had the iPhoneModem name first, but didn't release a public beta until after Addition did - for now, the packages have the same name, and are marked as "by Addition" or "zsrelay") which offers SSH encryption, background running of the daemon, and best of all - its completely free.

Their website has instructions on how to get the Mac app running (its a tad more involved the first time you set it up - you have to go into the settings and put in your iPhone's MAC address, wlan name you'd like to make, and a password for it) - once set up, though, its fully secure and running beautifully.

    From their site:

    HOWTO iPhoneModem on Mac

Copy iPhoneModem to your Applications folder and launch it. A little iPhone icon will appear in your menu bar - click it. In the new popup menu choose "Setup...". Please fill in all fields exactly. "IP-Address of Mac" is the Address of your mac will use in the ad-hoc network. The last component (after the third dot) can be any value between 1 and 254 except 113, this reserved for the iPhone. "Password of Mac" is the password of the adminstartors account on your Mac (usually your account). "Wlan Name" will be used as the name of new ad-hoc network which you'll use to connect to your iPhone later on. For the WEP encryption enter a 13 character long password in the "Wlan-Password" box. Leave the "Socks Port" as it is. "iPhone root Password" should be clear - by default - is set to alpine and must be changed. To do so open Terminal with your iPhone and mac in the same network. Connect to your iPhone (ssh iphoneip -l root). The command "passwd" will change your root password - be sure to choose a password you remember! Repeat this step to change the password for the mobile user: "passwd mobile", (default here is alpine on fw ( 2.1 and dottie afterward). Finally fill in the MAC address of your iPhone's Wifi interface in the box "iPhone Mac Address". You can find your Wi-Fi Address under Settings > General > About. Save this settings, open the iPhoneModem popup again and choose "start connection...".

How to run iPhoneModem zsrelay on your iPhone

Running iPhoneModem zsrelay on your iPhone involves only a few easy steps:
Install 'iPhoneModem zsrelay' from Cydia. It is hosted on the MMi repository and listed in the 'Networking' section.
Restart SpringBoard - (optionaly if you want status icons)
Go into your iPhone preferences and select 'iPhoneModem'.
    Choose your options:
    - 'Insomnia mode': Network connections will be keept alive even when you iPhone is locked (recommended).
    - 'SSH on launch': Start sshd along with zsrelay. This is needed if you want to use ssh for secure tunneling.
Start iPhoneModem zsrelay - (flip the 'start proxy' switch) If you did restart your springbord a status icon will appear after a few seconds. Depending on your insomnia mode settings this icon is either gray or blue/orange. The colored reminds you that the network keep-alive is active.
Connect your mac/pc to zsrelay using SOCKS5 on port 1080.
'Advanced' preferences:The advanced tab contains some additional settings and status information. Here you can disable or enable the status icons and modify the URL used for keeping your outbound GPRS/EDGE/3G connection happy. This page also displays a nice traffic meter on the top so you can keep track on your active connections and data transfers.

I got it to work with PC only through proxifier.

Setting firefox or IE with manual proxy does not work, any ideas?

I have no prob with proxifier.

For those looking for instructions on setting up a adhoc network and connecting both iphone and PC together (XP):

      go to to network connections
right click on wireless network connection
      click on wireless networks
      click on advanced
select computer to computer ad hoc
clear automatically connect to non-preferred networks
      click wireless networks
      click on add
choose a network name (iphone for example)
      choose WEP enabled
uncheck the key is provided for me automatically
enter a network key thats 5 letters ex. iphon
      click on OK
      Go to general
      under TCP/IP
      set your PC for static:

      "use the following IP address
      IP address: 192.168.1.20
      subnet: 255.255.255.0
      gateway: 192.168.1.1

      click on OK, and OK.

      then go to your iphone

on the iphone, go to settings, wifi, choose a network and you should see iphone now
click on connect, type in your WEP password

once connected to the iphone ad hoc network, hit the right arrow on the network to specify static ip:

enter 192.168.1.21 as the IP address
      subnet 255.255.255.0

and back to wifi networks, it will referesh with this ip now.

      download proxifier

open it, click on options, settings, add:

      hostname: 192.168.1.21
      port 1080
      SOCKS5

      click on OK, OK.

      Thats it!

Start your browser and it should work.

      Hi, proxifier check runs smoothly:
      Code:
      [19:17] Testing Started.
      	Proxy Server
      	Address:	192.168.1.21:1080
      	Protocol:	SOCKS 5
      	Authentication: NO

[19:17] Starting: Test 1: Connection to the Proxy Server
      [19:17] IP Address: 192.168.1.21
      [19:17] Connection established
      [19:17] Test passed.
[19:17] Starting: Test 2: Connection through the Proxy Server
      [19:17] Authentication was successful.
[19:18] Connection to google.dk:80 established through the proxy server.
[19:20] A default web page was successfuly loaded.
      [19:20] Test passed.
[19:20] Starting: Test 3: Proxy Server latency
      [19:20] Latency = 2 ms
      [19:20] Test passed.
      [19:21] Testing Finished.
But however, i can't connect to the internet with firefox, IE or anything else for that matter.

I've installed zsrelay iphone modem, but I don't see the settings anywhere. I get a list of apps in settings.app but iphone modem is not one of them.

Any ideas why it would not show up? I've reinstalled several times.

i found better compatible with PDANet at PdaNet -- Use your iPhone as a Wireless Router for your PC/Mac

the great thing is, no special software to install in PC/MAC, just adhoc will do.

So after almost throwing my computer off a fu_king cliff, ill give you the abbreviated version.

I downloaded additions iphonemodem. It worked perfect on 3.1.3

I updated to 4.0.1 additions iphonemodem will not open on the phone but it is trying to connect on the computer side.

my phone shows a locally generated IP address on sbsettings. . . however no wifi signal is going out to the computer.

I tried zsrelay and I get the "problem occoured with downloading the preference package" line of crap.

I really need some help. If you knowof this software and know how to help please help me.

Just to add insult to injury I went and downloaded pdanet. . . that didnt work either at first. I played with it and kept opening and closing the app. the second or third time around the wifi signal found itself. . . oddly enough the computer connected without being told which is weird because it went from a higher signal to a lower signal. . .

I downloaded the media player I needed so I guess I will go back to regular wifi for now.

The problem is still the same as before. Can anyone help with the iphonemodem issues?

      EDIT: CRIKIE

Ok so in order to get on the internet you have to have an internet connection. . . I thought I was using pdanet to surf. I just checked the wifi signal on my comp and it comes back to hpsetup. I used that to connect with pdanet. . . my phone is working on insomnia and I know that insomnia is a good program (survives respring). . . but a reboot? and to top it off pdanet is turned off completly. . . so I think?

Please, someone, help me through all this. I thoguht for a second I might have figured this all out. . . I didnt.
