  • iPhoneModem - Extremely Easy 3G Tethering in OS X

Addition released their application iPhoneModem Saturday through the MMi Cydia source. They describe it as "an application for the iPhone that aims at making it really easy to use the iPhone's internet connection on your computer," and they deliver.

A while back, we posted a how to on tethering the iPhone using NateTrue's method - which required some command line knowledge and a few network tweaks on your OS X box. Until now, this was pretty much the easiest way to tether your 3G iPhone (and still is a great method which only takes a few minutes).

iPhoneModem makes tethering a 10 second process. I've been testing it the past few hours, and its incredibly well-designed and functional. For those of you running OS X Leopard (iPhoneModem is actively working on the desktop client for MacOS 10.4 and Microsoft Windows, as well as a 1.x iPhone version of the app), you simply install their Leopard app (200kb .dmg direct download), open it, and press connect. This will automatically create an ad-hoc network named iPhoneModem on your Mac.

Then, on your iPhone, go to your settings and join the iPhoneModem network.

Once connected, open the iPhoneModem app on the iPhone. It will automatically connect (assuming you've got the iPhoneModem running on your Mac), and that's it - you're tethered. Open Safari on your Mac, you should be browsing already.

It's really that simple. I've tested it on both my MacBook and MacBook Pro, with no issues at all. Browsing over 3G is of course fast, and battery draining. Make sure your iPhone is plugged in.

    The Addition devs note:

If you can use the web, using Safari, but other Internet applications are not working:
    - make sure that the application you are using supports a "Socks Proxy" and see how you can enable it, for example Firefox does not look at the System Preferences and you have to manually configure it on it's own preferences dialog.
Their original plan was to release through AppStore, but Apple has yet to approve their request, which was made in July of 08. Also, Apple has a shaky history of approving tethering apps (remember NetShare's approved, pulled, approved, pulled antics?)

The app is shareware, with a $9.99 (PayPal only) price to remove the annoying registration nags (well spent for the quality of this app). The registration codes are based on IMEI.

    Nice job, Addition.

edit: previous issues of security have been resolved in current version (2.0.0+).

So AT&T has specifically stated that this isn;t allowed. My question is, can they detect it? Or is it just going to show up as bandwidth to them. I am thinking the answer is the latter, but I would rather not find out with a $500 bill.

I'm trying to install iphonemodem on my jailbroken 2.1 3g phone, but I keep getting a "Source Error: NetDB: apt.modmyi.com nodename nor servname provided, or not known."

Is this to do with the domain name change here?

Update: the source needed upgrading. Problem solved!

QuickPwn worked like a charm, thanks!

I'll try iPhone modem out tomorrow when I am trying to get online away from home. But unfortunately I see no SOCKS proxy options for Yahoo messenger and Eudora, two apps I use frequently. :-(

Well, it's not going to show up saying "TETHERED DATA USAGE: xxxxKB" but you do have to be intelligent about it. There is only so much you can legitimately download over a small period of time on a mobile device which isn't supposed to allow direct file downloading. I have no idea what the limit is before ATT can legally decide that you are violating your contract by tethering, but I do know that they can charge you for the full price of all of the data usage, with additional fees, as well as immediate termination of your contract. That is, if they catch you.

Anyways, this is why it says in the original post to be smart - don't be torrenting the first season of Heroes over this connection. Just for that emergency situation where there's no wifi for your laptop and you need to connect (or you're just hella bored in the middle of class, lol). Or when your ISP is down for a day or two and you really need to check your email and read the latest MMi update

The limit for "unlimited" is 5GB for a month but that doesn't mean that AT&T won't investigate if you've actually download 1GB within 5 hours. I've been an AT&T data plan customer since 2005 and have been using tethering with a number of phones since then. AT&T hasn't raised a red flag yet but then again, I don't think I've gone over 5GB. The most that I've downloaded on a single go was about 700mb via usenet when I was out of town.

      Hi,
since this whole thread seems to cause a lot of confusion to all of us - here are the key facts:
      1. there is a free app called iPhoneModem.
It is maitained by Markoxyz and it existed under this name
long before the paid version appeared.
You can download it from iPhoneModem, Internet für Mac und iPhone
      2. The paid iPhoneModem has many design flaws:
        • It uses unencrypted ad-hoc networks
        • Your tether can be discovered and used by any mac user
smart enough to hook into your open wlan net
        • It doesn't background when run on your iPhone
      So PLEASE DON'T BUY IT!
Wait for the free iPhoneModem to appear on the MMi repository. It uses zsrelay as it's background daemon. This allows you to run a tether and use your iPhone for your all day tasks.
It even has integrated network keep alive (similar to insomnia). So in case you don't want to use your phone while tethering you can at least lock it.

While I'm at this - zsrelay is looking for volunteers to test out future releases and betas.
If you're interested just send me an email or drop a PM.

      P.S. Did I mention it is cross-fw e.g. works on 1.1.x AND 2.X?
      Cheers,
      Shirk

      Hi All

On Weekend i have a Solution to get all applications on Mac working without modification. It need some more tests but it is working.

For Linux and Windows users: You can use iPhoneModem out of the Box it provides a Socks5 Proxy and together with OpenSSH you can setup a Proxychain that AT&T never see your IP-Addresses .

Yes Mac users AT&T see your Mac IP also not ...

      Ciao Marco
