  • Report: Apple Ramping Up Support for Same-Sex Marriage

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple will be among the corporate giants to step up and show the U.S. Supreme Court its intensified support for the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States.

Apple, reports Bloomberg on Tuesday, will argue that bans in 41 states negatively impact workplace morale and undermine recruiting.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to begin deliberation on California's passage of Proposition 8, a 2008 initiative that banned gay marriage in the state. Apple previously donated $100,000 to fight Prop 8 in October of 2008.
Going to bat with Apple will be dozens of well-known companies, including Abercrombie & Fitch, EBay, Marsh & McLennan, NCR Corp., Nike, Oracle Corp., Office Depot, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Sun Life Financial, Xerox Corp. and Zynga.

“No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws,” the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by the law firm representing the group.

The high court will being hearings for two separate cases (both pertinent to same-sex marriage) starting March 26th and 27th.

I don't have a problem with same sex marriage. But damn how many times are we going to go thru with this? Prop 8 didn't go thru what now? 3-4 times now? This is the damn problem with the courts system and Cali. Everyone B!TCH3$ and wines when they don't get there way. The appeals process need to be overhauled and regulated. When people vote "NO" no should mean no!!! Not to keep appealing and wasting taxpayers money because you didn't get your way.

Oh my god??? This website *** out the 3 lettered word starting with the letter G.

I don't agree with Apple and I hope the fail in all their efforts. Call it what you want but it isn't a marriage. Call it a domestic partnership. Marriage produces offspring which is a building block of a society.

My problem lies with the fact that major corporations can contribute that much money to any political stance, be it crap like this or presidential campions. They always have a hidden agenda.

Anyone else see this as just another opportunity for big companies to improve their image with a new/younger generation? "Hey everyone look at us! We suddenly support ***-marriage! We never did before, but now that we are 100% sure the country is going in this direction... we do! We are a young, cool, hip company who is all about diversity!! We will support ***-marriage, and you can support us by buying are products!

YEAH! Let's force heterosexual couples who want to be "married" to have offspring too. No marriage property rights or health care rights or social security rights until they have offspring. Else society shall crumble.

      "Marriage produces offspring"??
So I guess those married couples who can't conceive shouldn't be labeled married then.
Oh please, get with the times. Stop hating on other people's happiness. If you don't like it, don't attend a *** marriage.

Can anyone name a civilization that has flourished while condoning supporting homosexuality? Family is the most important building block in society.

      Oh really?
So what would you call relationships that result in offspring, but not marriage? Not to mention the fact that almost half of marriages result in divorce...including the ones that have produced offspring.
Which would you think is the bigger drag on society?

Unless you want me dictating and criticizing your relationship you call (or will call) marriage, shut up and realize if I get married IT WON'T AFFECT YOUR LIFE AT ALL.

If a single word makes society crumble, then we have much bigger issues

Giving CIVIL recognition to a couple won't touch your marriage.

      Get over your homophobia.

I suppose you will have more than your brand of tablet to consider in your future purchases.

      Per Bloomberg:

Dozens of companies, including Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Morgan Stanley (MS), are planning to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, saying bans in 41 states harm workplace morale and undermine recruiting.
The group, which also includes Facebook Inc. (FB) and Intel Corp., (INTC) will make its case this week as the high court prepares to take up California’s Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that halted *** marriage after it was allowed for five months.
“No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws,” the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe LLP, the law firm representing the group.
The filing is part of an effort to convince the court that *** marriage has wide public support. Dozens of Republicans, including former presidential candidate and Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, are also planning to file a brief backing such unions.
The Obama administration must say by Feb. 28 what if any position it will take in the case.
      More Companies
A larger group of companies -- more than 200 -- is also poised to side with ***-rights advocates in a second Supreme Court case, involving a federal law that defines marriage as a heterosexual union. Under that law, known as the Defense of Marriage Act, legally married *** couples can’t claim the federal tax breaks and other benefits available to opposite-sex spouses.
The companies in that case are part of a collection of more than 250 employers, including cities, counties and law firms.
Although the high court often ignores so-called friend-of- the-court briefs, in some instances they can shape the way some justices view a dispute. When the court upheld university affirmative action in 2003, the majority opinion relied on briefs filed by corporations and former military officers touting the benefits of racial diversity.
The Proposition 8 brief will include about 60 companies or their U.S. units, according to a list provide by Orrick Herrington. The publicly traded companies include Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF), EBay Inc. (EBAY), Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC), NCR Corp. (NCR), Nike Inc. (NKE), Oracle Corp. (ORCL), Office Depot Inc. (ODP), Panasonic Corp. (6752), Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), Sun Life Financial Inc. (SLF), Xerox Corp. (XRX) and Zynga Inc. (ZNGA)
The court will hear arguments March 26 and 27 in the two cases, Hollingsworth v. Perry, 12-144, and United States v. Windsor, 12-307.

It's ironic that someone name calling others homophobes because they don't believe in changing the definition of a word. The same type people who get in a tizzy if you accidentally say the word *** - because they are so sensitive they claim rights to that word too but others aren't allowed to use it.
