  • NFL to Use iPad App for Player Concussion Diagnosis

A dedicated application for Apple's iPad will be used during the 2013-14 NFL season to help teams diagnose concussions.

With the dangers of improperly treated or misdiagnosed head trauma becoming an increasingly persistent concern across the sports landscape today, the NFL's decision has been widely lauded since a formal demonstration of the app took place on ESPN over the weekend.

League officials demonstrated how the new system will work at the annual scouting combine Friday in Indianapolis. The move comes after a recommendation from the NFL's Head, Neck & Spine Committee.
As we understand it, the iPad app in no way impacts how concussions are treated. It simply creates "a scoring system" to determine if there are "large discrepancies between a player's baseline score and his gameday score." If there is a significant difference, a concussion can be more easily - and confidently - diagnosed.

Seattle Seahawks team doctor Stanley Herring tells ESPN that the app will help spot head trauma, but that "team doctors still need to trust their observations and instincts."

Why not use a motion sensor and wireless interface built into the helmet itself to log impacts and start collecting some real data on this?

For the cost of one sensor in a helmet, they can hire 10 cheerleaders.
