  • Bored With Those Wallpaper Images? It's Time to Try LivePapers

Animated wallpapers are fun. So why deal with those boring images anymore? LivePapers, by iOS developer Porkholt Labs, is a new jailbreak application that just became available in Cydia Saturday afternoon. The application allows you to apply animated wallpapers to your iOS device and it works on all jailbroken iOS devices from iOS 5.1.1 up to iOS 6.1.2.

LivePapers promises to be battery efficient and powerful. It uses OpenGL ES, which the developer says will provide smooth animations and increased performance on iOS devices. After 40 seconds of inactivity, the animations will freeze to even further save battery. You can resume the animation by simply swiping to a different page on your home screen. We can confirm that even on a sluggish iPhone 4, the animations via LivePapers are just as smooth as on our iPhone 5.

LivePapers will add an application to your home screen, which you can open to configure your LivePapers:

The application will offer a Cover Flow-like interface for all of your LivePapers. From the application, you can tap on an animation to see a preview of the animation, and then tap on the green status bar to exit the animation preview. You can enable the LivePapers for the Home and/or Lock screens by using the "Home" and "Lock" buttons at the top left of the application – a check mark indicates that the option is selected.

You can also tap on the "Configure" button at the top right of the application to configure the animation preferences for the animations individually. Each animation has its own preferences, which are separate from one another.

By default, the free LivePapers application only comes with one animation – the bubbles animation. It has no options to configure, but you can apply it or switch back to your boring image wallpaper. To get the options shown above, you can download add-ons for LivePapers, such as the Bubbles Pro LivePaper and Nexus LivePaper. These are 99¢ each in Cydia.

The Bubbles Pro LivePaper will let you configure the particle count, particle lifetime, particle size, particle opacity, velocity, minimum depth, maximum depth, background, colors, touch actions, and particle edges. The Nexus LivePaper will let you configure the wallpaper, strip width, strip length, velocity, depth tolerance, and strip count.

As you can see, the animations will occur on both the home screen and the lock screen:

When you are charging your iOS device, the animations will happen below the battery layer and your battery indicator will still function normally as expected:

If you’re using the Nexus LivePaper, you can choose to use the default wallpaper that it comes with, or you can use your normal home screen and lock screen wallpaper and have the animations play right above it:

Because LivePapers is an application that accepts LivePaper add-ons, third party developers can make more LivePapers that you can download in Cydia to use through LivePapers. While Bubbles Pro and Nexus are the only two options in Cydia at this point in time, the developer says that they are working on a live weather wallpaper. Other developers will also be able to make their own to be hosted in Cydia.

LivePapers is really awesome, especially for those of you that are into customization... and if you’ve heard of vWallpapers… well, it’s no comparison. LivePapers wins hands-down in terms of user interface, options, and performance. LivePapers also respond to touch on the lock screen!

LivePapers will work on any iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.1.1 or later. Check it out!

    Name: LivePapers
    Price: FREE
    Version: 1.0.0-5
    Requirements: iOS 5.1.1+
    Repo: BigBoss
    Developer: Porkholt Labs
    Editor's Rating:  6/5

Note: While LivePapers is free, the Bubbles Pro and Nexus LivePapers used in this piece as examples are 99¢ in the BigBoss repository of Cydia.

      A couple things..

W/ LockInfo, I can not interact with Nexus on the lock screen.

Second, Bubbles pro only runs for about 3 seconds and then freezes on the home screen.. I have to lock and unlock to get it the bubbles to move for another 3 seconds.. Don't have this issue with Nexus on my home screen..

Anyone else having a issue with this latest update and intelliscreen x? Tried it on both my phone and girlfriends and every time I bring the NC down it freezes the default bubble screen until I lock and unlock the phone.

I think the bubbles and nexus look better than that, just my opinion though.
Anthony has stated the difference between this and vwallpaper. One is graphical, the other plays video as wallpaper. I have tried both of them and have to say the livepapers method of using graphics is the better solution for it. It is more like the Android method of having live wallpaper.

I'm sure it is but until they come out with a few more options, I'm sticking with vWallpaper.

yup, still a long way to go but I think it has the potential to be a lot better than vwallpaper.

Except w/ vWallpaper you get a lot more features!
      Because vWallpapers are video wallpapers.

LivePapers are not videos. They're animated graphics than have been programmed to interact to touch and not drain battery like videos will.

Could you explain how vWallpaper is better?

I will take programmable animated graphics over looping videos any day of the week!

I have to agree that 'eventually' the LivePaper method will be better but, as of now, its really no different in regards to appearance.

I disagree that the bubbles and nexus look better. I'm not a huge live wallpaper fan but I've always liked this Cloud video!

Will all these be an additional $1? I'm gun shy to buy one now if a better one comes out next week

I just find it boring. I think it will be better when they come out with some more interesting ones. I'd rather have a cool looking looping video than some boring bubbles or lines. Yeah, it's cool that they interact with you when you touch the screen but it's just bland looking IMO. A weather livepaper would be sick and I'm curious to see it. I'll be happy to ditch vWallpaper when livepaper comes out with more some more interesting wallpapers because vWallpaper kind of sucks and is buggy like I said.

I found a bug today. When I access the camera from the lock screen then press the home button it crashes springboard. I deleted the tweak and it corrected the problem.

I just tried that and couldn't reproduce the crash. Maybe it's another tweak or combination of this one and another causing it.

Thanks for trying. I assumed it was this tweak because I was going through them one by one and the crash stopped when I deleted it. I thought camera tweak was the culprit but I reinstalled it after deleting LP and still no problems.

Could be a combination of the two. Try removing the camera tweak and just using livepapers to see if it still crashes then.

I appreciate the battery saving awareness of the programmer.

However, since my battery saving concerns are not as high...is there any way to extend the animation freeze timer (increase from 30-40 secs to >60secs)? It is far too short for my liking, but even a minute would be a vast improvement...maybe a "stand-alone" tweak?

i'm not able to pull down intelliscreenX when livepaper is active... at least not with the Nexus one (have tried with the Bubbles one). i prefer intelliscreenX over livepaper so until it's fixed i'm keeping it disabled.

I will point out that the wallpaper likes to freeze if you launch an application from a link within another application. To get things working again, simply lock and unlock your phone.

Not a major problem, but a little annoyance.

Edit: Also, according to the new update, unless I'm missing something; livepapers is now compatible with music controls pro. However, when I tried to download it, they kept removing each other. So I guess we still have to wait for this to no longer be an issue.
