  • RIM to Take on iAd with New "BlackBerry Advertising Service"

If the folks at Research in Motion are intimidated by Apple and its popular products and services, it certainly isn't showing.

First, on Monday, the makers of the BlackBerry smartphone introduced the "PlayBook" tablet, the first real competitor to the iPad in the tablet marketplace. Now, on Tuesday, Blackberry is introducing its very own mobile marketing platform to squarely challenge iAd. Today, RIM formally announced the "BlackBerry Advertising Service," which will "help developers integrate advertising in their BlackBerry smartphone applications quickly and easily, while also allowing advertisers, agencies and brands to work with a broad selection of advertising networks."

According to Alan Brenner, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry Platform at Research In Motion: "The BlackBerry Application Platform is providing a truly powerful foundation for our developer community. The BlackBerry Advertising Service offers developers a quick and easy way to integrate advertising in their applications. The service reduces the commercial and technical complexity of enabling ads within an application and offers developers a new avenue of monetization."

Essentially, the set-up for BlackBerry's new advertising service is far from revolutionary. With just a few lines of code, "developers can include advertising in applications that are relevant to their users and tie into core BlackBerry smartphone features." Analogous to Apple's endeavor to pacify its iOS developers with a potentially lucrative mobile advertising platform, RIM is also dangling "green" opportunities for BlackBerry developers by simplifying the integration of advertising both on the development side and on the commercial side.

I'm sure that will be all be there by the time iPad 3 is out. Galaxys looks good but I cant imagine myself using android on a tablet..I think the playbook will have a good future up ahead, all they need is an app market..or do blackberries already have one?

Yeah I know, because you can double the CPU, add an extra sensor, and a camera without raising costs. Really though, 2GHz?

Another brilliant flame-bating article by Michael Essany. Why is this moron getting paid? ModMyI, you need to hold yourself to higher standards. "to squarely challenge iAd". Blackberry isn't competing with iAd. They are hosting their own ad service on their own devices. The two services will never compete directly.

Then why are you reading his articles?! It must be too hard to avoid them.

I seriously doubt that Blackberry is going after the iAds.

I read the articles without checking the author. A few sentences in when I realize I'm reading garbage I check the author. Sure enough it's (nearly) always this guy.

      politicalslug... you're a fool.

Your are an advertiser, you want to place an advert, you have a choice, between two advertising companies, one will offer you a better deal. They have competed for your business. Done.

And lay off the guy huh? I'll bet he put a heap of work into this, and I found it quite interesting. I doubt you could do better.

Don't see how iAd ( an iDevice ONLY ad service) will be challenged by BAS (a Blackberry ONLY ad service)?

A better description would be that RIM is copying Apple's ideas, as usual to use in their own products.

Its not like iAds will run on Blackberry or BAS will run on iPhone. The platforms are competing. The ad services, not so much.

heap of work? all this guy does is copy and paste other people's "stories", and they all just happen to be BS rumor stories about iPhone coming to Verizon, mostly.
