Apple confirmed Tuesday that it has been attacked by a group of hackers believed to be the same individuals (an small outfit of Chinese hackers) responsible for targeting Facebook recently.
Based on our knowledge of the matter at this time, the hackers succeeded at infecting the Mac laptops of several Apple employees. In the wake of the attack, the incident is being described as the "widest known cyber attacks against Apple-made computers to date."
The following statement was provided by Apple to the press:
Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers. The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers. We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple. We are working closely with law enforcement to find the source of the malware.
We're told that Apple plans to release a software tool capable of protecting consumers from a similar attack.
