  • VLC for iPad Now Available: "It plays everything!"

A company by the name of Applidium, has just been approved for their VLC for iPad app. VLC, which I'm sure most of you have used, is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player, that plays almost every type of media file. The player has every codec built-in, meaning you never have to download one again.

It is the absolute go-to media player on desktops, and now for the first time ever, it's right on your iPad. This means no more converting videos, and spending hours waiting for mp4's to pump out. Being that it is available for free, it is a MUST HAVE on your iPad.

I have yet to use it, as I still do not see it listed, so post your comments here and let us know if you've got it up and running. There are some apparent issues with resolutions, which could be a headache, but nonetheless, we are excited it's here.

The application's developers, Applidium, are also working on bringing VLC to the iPhone and iPod later this year.

Download VLC for iPad in the AppStore

I heard you still need a specific resolution and I don't think it plays mkv(nvm this if it does). But ya if you're gonna convert the resolution might as well convert to mp4 with handbrake...so there's no real point lol.

What is this under? I can't find it in the AppStore.

All that comes up is the VLC Remote App.

Here is an app store link:

Added a .mkv and .avi and crashes to home screen upon opening the app. Uninstalling and trying again.

This is great news. There is a jailbreak app knows as OpenStreamer that attempt to do this, but it doesn't run very well. I tried running some flac music files through it and it sounded like hell. Hopefully this will be better. Can't wait for the iPhone version.

The .mkv was causing the app to crash on startup. Removing it and i can get to my .avi. Started the .avi to a very patchy, flaky video but good audio - it soughtred itself out after 10 seconds. Then forwarded the video to about 30 minutes in and the audio was still at the beginning. Let it play for 2 minutes and the audio/video sync issue did not change at all.

      Not very impressed so far.

Can anyone confirm what formats this works with and at what resolutions? If this works as well as VLC on my desktop, this may just be the GREATEST APP OF ALL TIME.

They are working on an iPhone version, which they have failed to mention in every press release previous to launch i've read.

I guess they where expecting it to get rejected and saying that an iPhone + iPad version was submitted would create more uproar if rejected.

As it is the app is half baked and far from ready. The only files i can get smooth, reliable playback with is .mp4?!
