  • Apple's Developer Payout Tops $8 Billion

As recently as January, Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, confirmed that Apple's thriving developer community has been paid in excess of $7 billion in return for cranking out some 775,000 apps for the iOS ecosystem.

What a difference a month can make.

Although the revelation took a backseat to other headline-worthy claims by Apple CEO Tim Cook during his keynote presentation at the Goldman Sachs investor conference Tuesday, Cook said today that Apple's payout to developers has now ballooned to $8 billion.

The dramatic spike in developer payouts is notable for no shortage of reasons, not the least of which is the rate of acceleration. Between October 2012 and January 2013, for example, payout increased by $500 million. Between January and February of this year, it's already increased by $1 billion.

While it remains to be seen if this degree of growth will be sustained or built upon as 2013 progresses, one thing is for certain. With Android's app ecosystem expanding dramatically over the last six months, it's a safe bet Apple will continue to tout its payout stats in hopes of convincing as many developers as possible that Apple remains the best place for developers to find their fortunes.
