  • Add Additional Touch Gestures to Contacts With 'CallTap'

Wouldn’t it just be great if instead of tapping on a contact from the Contacts application to see all the contact details and options, you could just perform a tap gesture on the contact's name to execute an action? A new free jailbreak tweak called CallTap by iOS developer theiostream is now live on Cydia and it allows you to perform tap-based gestures on the names of your contacts from the list of contacts in the Contacts application and it can save a lot of time.

As shown above, performing a tap-based gesture on a contact’s name will bring up a prompt asking you what you’d like to do. Additionally, the tweak adds a new, blue detail button to the side of the contact’s name. For this example, we’ve set tapping on a name to calling the contact and holding down on a name to sending the contact a text message. CallTap comes with a variety of different actions for each gesture, but it only offers three main gestures in the preferences pane from the Settings application.

The preferences pane is pictured below along with a list of what each gesture is capable of doing:

    Tap on the detail button:
    • None
    • Call
    • Message
    • E-mail
    • FaceTime
    • Show details

Long tap on the contact's name:
    • None
    • Call
    • Message
    • E-mail
    • FaceTime
    • Show details

    Tap on the contact's name:
    • Call
    • Message
    • E-mail
    • FaceTime
    • Show details

The additional switch labeled "Show everything" allows the blue detail button to be shown even if it doesn't apply to the contact. For example, if you have the action of tapping on the detail button beside the contact's name set to sending a text message and the contact you choose doesn't have a phone number to send a text message to, then the button will still be shown beside the contact regardless of not having the data present for the contact. It is recommended that you disable this feature since it will reduce clutter where applicable.

CallTap is a useful tweak as it reduces the amount of time necessary to perform a task in iOS. It also does so without irritating the fluidity of iOS’ Contacts application interface because it doesn’t make it any harder to use nor does it slow down the performance of the application. In addition, the added gestures allow you to get ahold of your contacts in fewer steps than the way Apple implemented the Contacts application.

For a free tweak, it's worth the download for anyone that uses their Contacts application to launch phone calls, text messages, e-mails, and FaceTime calls. For iPod touch users, the phone call feature does not apply and sending text messages only applies to iMessage.

Really like this tweak, however whenever I try to use it to send a message it crashes. Anyone else experience this? I'm wondering if it's because I'm not using Apples's stock messaging app....

isn't it just as simple without the tweak to type the feature you want? ... just curious.
