Following the publisher's revelation that WIRED magazine will soon have a digital version of its publication for something that looks a lot like the rumored Apple tablet, a new report indicates that there are plans afoot by the biggest names in publishing to create a sort of App Store for digital content. Quoting unnamed source, the New York Observer reports on a new consortium being put together by Time Inc, Condé Nast and Hearst to put their combined total of more than fifty magazines online.
In the latest move in its ongoing - and so far extremely successful - legal efforts against Mac clone maker Psystar, Apple has asked a Federal judge to issue a permanent injunction against the company, forbidding it from ever selling any computer bundled with Mac OS X. Apple's Vice President Phil Schiller indicated in an affidavit that he wants an end to the long legal battle, saying "Apple should not be required to file a new lawsuit" every time they release a new version.
Earlier this month, Apple won a major battle in the ongoing war when a judge ruled that Psystar had violated its rights to reproduce OS X and distribute it, and had created derivative works. In a filing with U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup on Monday, Apple claimed that they are entitled to a permanent judgment against... [Read More]
The iPhone is about to make its big debut at supermarkets across the United Kingdom.
The "UK equivalent of Wal-Mart" as it's known, popular British retailer Tesco has announced plans to begin offering the iPhone in some of its largest stores. The deal to sell iPhones through Tesco was born of a partnership between the supermarket chain and the original UK iPhone carrier, O2. Although Tesco hasn't confirmed when its shelves will be stocked with the iPhone, most expect the wildly popular handset to be available any day now.
The supermarket Juggernaut is said to still be crunching numbers and ironing out details with Apple.
Catering to a new category of digital content demand, Apple has introduced "Live Music" as an addition to iTunes that accommodates a wealth of live concert recordings through their teamwork with Live Nation.
Although Apple has a lengthy track record of distributing live concerts, the new Live Music section essentially serves a channel for both new and old recordings where classic concert albums and concert films will join new recordings from Live Nation as well as many concerts recorded at various Apple stores - all of which can be sorted by store location.
You will probably notice as quickly as I did, however, that a great deal of the featured content "now available" has already been available for quite some time. One example given is that of Pearl Jam's 2006 Bootleg recordings from their live tour. But It's only now that these and other live concert recording are being lumped together in a category of their own.
Recently we covered an article about the new iPhone worm that has been going around which affects users with OpenSSH installed and have not changed the default password. It started off innocent and escalated to something more threatening.
While there is of course the ability to change your password, some of you might not be so lucky and worms could be crawling your iPhone. Do not fret, as today I bring you some options for cleaning your iPhone. While not all of these options will bring you success, at least you'll know what your options are.
You'll need to download a copy of MobileTerminal from Cydia before hand,... [Read More]
NOTE: There is an application similar to this for the PC that is in BETA and is already available called iDesigner. More geared for designers than the avid iPhone user though. Read more here
I caught wind today of an Windows Application that is in development by a the folks over at BeYourIPhone and a user by the name of AleBiT, that is designed to let you preview WinterBoard themes on your PC before installing them to your iPhone.
Don't get your hopes up just yet. Although the application is still in development (it looks like it still needs MAJOR development work, and it's not even in english, let alone its not exactly the most stable over at beyouriphone), this will be a more than useful tool for those of us with Jailbroken iPhones and a large amount of WinterBoard Themes. I can... [Read More]
With the increasing dissatisfaction with Apple's long approval process and seemingly arbitrary rejections, iPhone developers have been looking to alternatives to the App Store. The "gatekeeper" approach has been a boon to the jailbreaking community, as new marketplaces come up to offer healthy competition and user choice. We recently highlighted one independent App Store, Rock Your Phone, when they released their 2.0 version. The founder announced today that they're headed for $2 million US in revenue in the coming year.
As the source for popular, powerful apps like MyWi and My3G, RockYourPhone delivers the functionality that power users need but aren't getting from Apple and AT&T. In a press release today,... [Read More]
Reports are coming in that some of new iMacs with Core i7 Intel processors recently shipped from Shanghai are getting to their owners damaged or not booting at all.
There is already a long thread on the Apple support forum with a number of users describing he problems with their newly-arrived Macs. Many of them note cracked screens, with one reportedly showing a footprint on the surface. Some, more disturbingly, simply do not boot at all, such as the unit ordered by Engadget for review.
Numerous customers said the box containing their new system arrived in apparently undamaged condition, but that after they removed the packaging, they discovered that the computer had been damaged, most commonly the bottom left corner of the 27" IPS LCD display.... [Read More]
Last week rumors began to surface about what Apple would do to slash prices on its products for Black Friday, the ultimate day of sales following Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday. While initially it seemed that Apple would merely be discounting products on a percentage basis, new information is emerging that suggests a different plan may be in store for prospective Apple customers this Friday.
According to TFTS, here's what you might be able to expect.
Until now, Apple has largely stayed out of the incessant ad wars between AT&T and Verizon. Although a casual observer may have mistakenly believed that Apple was already involved in the ongoing battle, Apple has stayed above the fray despite the fact that its name along with the iPhone are constantly alluded to by the warring factions.
But Apple's ad war neutrality has now officially ended. And last night, two retaliatory iPhone TV ads began hitting the airwaves. The Apple ads effectively serve as back up to AT&T's TV ad campaign that, as PC World puts it, aims to "set the record straight around Verizon's 'there's a map for that' campaign."
